Newborn & Baby Oils

Welcome to our Family + Essential Oils series. We plan to cover every age and stage: Oils for Toddlers, Moms, Dads, Grandparents and Family Vacation. Someone we left out? Let us know in the comments and we’ll add them to our plan!

This is actually our second week, so if you missed our Postpartum post, take the time to catch up (we’ll wait:). Oh, and while you’re at it, check out the Top 10 Oils for Pregnancy – it happens to be one of our all-time top 10 posts.

Ok, now that we’ve talked mamas-to-be and new mamas, we’re ready to share some general guidelines and tips for using oils with your baby.

Essential Tips for Your Oily Baby

Ingestion Tips

Gotcha! No tips here. Young Living suggests waiting until after babyhood to try any of our vitality line with your child. We agree! The oils are powerful and highly concentrated for such little bodies.

Topical Tips

Young Living’s official recommendation for littles 0-1 is a 1:8 oil to carrier ratio. We say that’s a good starting point, but remember that every baby is different. Test dilution with your little one.

And if you are going to try a new oil on your child it’s a good idea to use just a drop or two on a small patch first, like the forearm. After a successful patch test (a few minutes with no reaction), you can apply as needed!

Pro Tip: Apply the essential oils first, followed by your favorite dilution oil.

Aromatic Tips

Again, think “start gently” when it comes to aromatically sharing oils with your baby. You can create a bond with baby by simply wearing an oil while skin to skin. And, just like the topical patch test, you will want to diffuse an oil for a short time at first to ensure your child has no sensitivity.

First Oily Days

In their Oils for the Nursery post, Young Living lists a few oils to use with caution with your baby.

  • Idaho Tansy
  • Clary Sage
  • Hyssop
  • Wintergreen
  • Eucalyptus
  • Peppermint

While watching for these oils is a good idea, it’s an even better idea to try out some of our favorites to support your little one’s health.

  • Ear Support: Melrose & Roman Chamomile, apply 1-2 drops behind and around ears
  • Diapering Support:
  •  Respiratory Support: Lavender or Peace & Calming, apply to chest, bottom of feet and diffuse intermittently during nap. Also, try diffusing Lavender & SniffleEase during the night or nap.
  • Sleep support: Lavender & Cedarwood,1-2 drops on chest and bottom of feet.
  • Mood Support: Frankincense & Joy, 1-2 drops over the heart
  • Digestive Support: DiGize/TummyGize, apply over the chest and belly 15 - 20 minutes before feedings. You can also apply after feeding, if needed.
  • Gut Health: Fennel, apply 1-2 drops over the colon area, rub clockwise

And that’s it, baby! Again, let us know if there are any ages or family members you’d like to see included in our series and we’ll get a writer on it!

Oil of the Week: Peppermint

Last (but not least), we’ll talk particulars of Peppermint in our final Oil of the Week installment.

Pass the Peppermint!

Peppermint is in the same family as Lavender. As a relative of the Swiss Army knife of Essential Oils, it’s not surprising that Peppermint is also a versatile, everyday oil. Most people have smelled or tasted Peppermint, but this mighty mint can do a lot more than spice up brownies (but really, these brownies are delicious).

Put some pep in your step by adding a drop of Peppermint to a glass of water or tea. We also love Peppermint for digestive support and post-workout massage. Tip: Only put Essential Oils in glass or stainless steel containers.

You can reach for Peppermint throughout your day! Here are a few tips to help you get started.

Digestive Support

Just like DiGize or Lemon, Peppermint helps support many facets of healthy intestinal function.

  • Travel: If plane travel gets you down, try inhaling Peppermint to calm down after takeoff.
  • Pregnancy: Oily mamas-to-be, give yourself a treat in those early days by inhaling or diffusing Peppermint.
  • Appetite: Take a bite out of overeating by inhaling Peppermint to satiate cravings before you cave.

All in Your Head

  • Head Support: Refresh head or sinuses by inhaling and/or applying Peppermint directly to your temples and back of neck.

Pro Tip: Peppermint is a hot oil, so test out your tolerance with a carrier oil before you try it neat.

  • Concentration: Try diffusing Peppermint and Lemon when tackling homework or projects that take focus.

De-Stress & Cool Down

  • Post Workout Massage: Treat tired muscles to a soothing Peppermint massage. Just dilute a few drops in your favorite carrier oil and apply as needed.
  • Cool Down: You can also use Peppermint as a way to cool down on a hot summer day. Try it on the back of your neck for a refreshing treat.

DIY Natural Solution

Clear your cobwebs and then mix up this DIY Spray to help keep your home pest free. Combine the following ingredients in an empty 16-oz glass spray bottle.

  • 5-7 drops Peppermint essential oil
  • 1 Squirt of eco-friendly dish soap
  • 1 TB of white vinegar (optional)
  • Warm water

Then spray on window frames, doorways and the dark corners where unwanted creatures often hang out. Bonus: This spray is kid and pet friendly and smells great!

Oil of the Week: DiGize

One of the greatest things about essential oils is that they know how to do their job even better than we know how to use them. The proper use of an oil could promote normal and healthy functions of that particular body system.

If you and your family happen to eat food, DiGize should be one of your go-to oils. It helps support digestive and gastrointestinal systems as well as intestinal function.

No More 20 Questions for “Funny Tummy”

For instance, your little one comes to you, “Mommy, my tummy feels funny.” In the past, I would run down the list of possible causes. What did he eat? Has he pooped today? Has he had enough water to drink? Is it his stomach, his bowels, or something else?

That was my first child.

Now I don’t have to spend my time worrying about cause and effect, I can skip right to solution! Go get your DiGize!

With my second, things are easier. Even though my 6-year-old can’t quite read the labels, he has his own special bottle with a rollerball that he can identify. When his tummy needs some TLC, I just point to our oils cache. He knows where to find his DiGize, and brings it to me. No twenty questions, no worry, just God’s incredible design working for my kiddo.

Most Valuable (and Versatile) Travel Companion

For me, the oil that I used the most while in a foreign country was probably DiGize. My gut was not prepared for the AMAZING food … and questionable food preparation. My digestive system suffered a little, but only a little.

If my tummy felt funny, the DiGize was ready for action. And, yes, I did smell like peppermint and fennel most of my trip.

On a plane, DiGize. On a boat, DiGize. On a narrow, winding, boulder-strewn mountain path in a vehicle that was really only meant for smooth pavement, DiGize. Gorging myself on the best fish I’ve ever tasted, DiGize. Drinking water that was very suspicious, DiGize. Overheated from the tropical environment, DiGize. And let’s not forget when Aunt Flo comes to visit a few days out of the month, you’ve got it, DiGize.

Let’s Talk Application

  • Behind your ears is a great preemptive measure before riding in vehicles.
  • Rub a drop or two in a clockwise motion topically over the abdomen.
  • Use as a compress over the belly.
  • Inhale a little.
  • A drop or two of DiGize Vitality under your tongue after a heavy meal.
  • And of course, the Vita Flex Points on the ankles and the bottoms of the feet.

Let’s Break It Down

Here are the therapeutic grade essential oils (and their special properties) that make this blend so special:

  • Tarragon: promotes relaxation
  • Ginger: warm and calming
  • Peppermint: cooling and soothing
  • Juniper: supports plumbing efficiency
  • Fennel: supports overall digestive function
  • Lemongrass: uplifting and lymphatic system support
  • Anise: supports digestion
  • Patchouli: calming and relaxing

AND to Sum It Up!

All of these oils work together for the greater good of the gut.  Whether you need things to slow down, speed up, deflate, chill, or just run smoothly, DiGize can be that oil to support your well-oiled machine.

No 20 questions, just a drop or two. Questions? Leave them in the comments!

Thanksgiving How-To: Incorporating Essential Oils into your Holiday

Feeling a little overwhelmed about getting through these next few days? There's the house to clean, food to cook (including a giant turkey!), and family to see. So take a deep breath, apply some Stress Away or Peace & Calming (now that it's back in stock!) and read the following tips and tricks on how to incorporate your oils into your Thanksgiving festivities! You will be happier and healthier because of it!

Setting The Mood

Set the Thanksgiving mood with this festive trio: Cinnamon Bark, Orange & Clove.

Set the Thanksgiving mood with this festive trio: Cinnamon Bark, Orange & Clove.

To get into the Holiday Spirit, get your diffuser(s) and add a few drops of OrangeCinnamon Bark and Clove. It will lift your spirits, increase immune support and, of course, make your house smell wonderful!

Make Your House Sparkle

It's easy to achieve that a fresh, holiday-ready sparkle with the power of Thieves Household Cleaner + Lemon.

It's easy to achieve that a fresh, holiday-ready sparkle with the power of Thieves Household Cleaner + Lemon.

Spruce up your house with the oh-so-popular and versatile Thieves Cleaner. Just pick it up and spray everything down at once; floors, mirrors, counters, whatever you can think of! Add a few drops of Lemon to your spray bottle for an extra fresh scent and a little boost of cleaning power! And it may just help you focus on what to clean next!

Spice Up Some Treats

Spice up your favorite dishes the Young Living way! I love cooking with Cinnamon Bark, Lemon & Nutmeg essential oils.

Spice up your favorite dishes the Young Living way! I love cooking with Cinnamon Bark, Lemon & Nutmeg essential oils.

Essential oils make a great addition to many recipes. I've added Oregano to spaghetti sauce, Lemon to ice cream and Rosemary to chicken. For this holiday my recommendation would be to substitute your typical Thanksgiving spices such as CinnamonCloveNutmeg with your essential oils instead. Just remember essential oils are pretty potent so just try a drop or maybe 2 to start with.

Favorite Side Dish: Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients:

2-4 Sweet Potatoes

Olive Oil (to toss)

1 drop each of Cinnamon Bark, Nutmeg and Ginger

Pinch of salt and brown sugar (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Set oven to 350.

  2. Peel sweet potatoes and chop into cubes.

  3. Toss in olive oil and essential oils.

  4. Spread out on a cookie sheet.

  5. Bake for about 45 minutes.

So delicious! I could eat the whole pan! Really...I think I did one time. But they're so good for you, it's ok! The sweet potatoes provide nutritional value and Vitamin A, and the essential oils contribute immune support from the Cinnamon Bark, digestive support from the Ginger and a boost of energy from the Nutmeg!

Favorite Festive Drink: Cider

Another great treat that’s even better when infused with essential oils is a good cup of Cider! Young Living shared a great recipe around Halloween for Witch's Brew, but it would be even better for this holiday. It's infused with Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Clove and Nutmeg. It has the same benefits as the Sweet Potato recipe (due to the similar oils used) except you have the added benefits of Lemon Essential Oil to help give you a more positive outlook and ability to focus on what else you need to do before the guests arrive!

Rapid Recovery

Spend time with your family...not the bathroom with the help of DiGize and Peppermint essential oils.

Spend time with your family...not the bathroom with the help of DiGize and Peppermint essential oils.

After you have consumed all your Turkey, Gravy, Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans, Salad and any other annual side dishes, you may need a little help to get through the rest of your evening and decrease your trips to the bathroom. After all, you will probably be sharing your typical 2-bathroom household with 10 times the amount of people as normal!

Apply some DiGize and you will be able to finish watching that football game with minimal interruptions, while your uncle misses out on the whole 3rd quarter. Complement the benefit of DiGize and tackle some of that post-Thanksgiving drowsiness by adding some Peppermint to your water or applying topically.

Festive ideas? Time to share!

From cleaning to side dishes, there are so many ways to incorporate Young Living Essential Oils into your holiday. We'd love to hear some of your ideas! Comment below with your favorite tips and tricks!

Enzymes: The Key to Longevity & Health

Did you know? Low enzyme levels are America's #1 cause of sickness and death. On the other hand, when enzymes like amylase, protease, and lipase are plentiful, the body remains healthy.

I know.

This sounds a little heavy, but in April, 2011, I learned the value of these proteins first hand. Inspired by a seminar where our founder Gary Young spoke on Young Living's enzymes, I increased my usage of Young Living's enzymes for the next 4 weeks. My results were outstanding.

Gary Young, our founder, with ESSENTIALZYMES-4. Our enzymes are enteric-coated and will digest in the colon which will work for you!

Digestive Benefits

Allerzyme: Vegetarian Enzyme Complex that promotes normal digestion.

My health journey with Young Living brought me wonderful, lifesaving products, but after I focused on enzymes, my digestive system became cleaner than it had been... I guess… my entire life! My benefits included:

  • One good bowel movement after each meal.

  • A bowel movement within 30 minutes of waking.

  • Very fresh breath in the morning. (Yes, really!)

Immune System Benefits

Young Living enzymes also encourage proper immune response to histamines. After 4 weeks of using more YL’s enzymes, I visited a family member whose dog lives the house. Before, I experienced classic allergy discomfort: itchy eyes, itching on my nose and face, sneezing, drainage down the throat and some wheezing when I went for a visit. Although I could control the congestion and head tension with Ravintsara, RC, Breathe Again and Peppermint, I hardly had to use the essential oils at all because I had been using YL’s enzymes! I was there for about ten days, and I even got to pet the dog from time to time!

Enzymes 101

Enzymes are proteins produced by living organisms. Heat and food processing kill enzymes. Not surprisingly, cultures that focus on whole foods experience longer, disease-free life.

Enzyme Benefits

Enzymes help support brain function, respiratory concerns and minor aches and pains. They also unlock the benefits of minerals, vitamins, proteins and hormones.

Generational Problem

Dr. Edward Howell, a pioneer in enzyme research, discovered that our problem may be generational. After 50 years of research, he uncovered overwhelming evidence indicating that the primary cause of degenerative disease in humans is enzyme deficiencies, exacerbated by enzyme deficient mothers passing on genetic deficiencies to their offspring.

Good News

Dr. William Lintz eliminated allergy symptoms in 472 patients by eliminating the toxins in their bodies. In hundreds of other cases, enzyme supplements taken orally restored the body's enzyme level, dissolved undigested food particles, and helped support the skin, respiratory and digestive systems.
